Thirty years ago while living in California, I took a class in Navajo weaving from a Navajo of the Arizona reservation. I am an Anglo not born into the Navajo culture. I struggled and struggled with the technique both in and out of the class. The struggle became a spiritual one with feelings of connection to times past and cultures present and past. For several years I wove pillows and hangings of my own design using the Navajo tapestry techniques learned in that class. The culture and art of the Navajos is still close to my heart and part of my soul. Even today when I sit down to weave, I feel that early spiritual connection--it is part of their lives and my life.
